Implant-supported dentures are supremely effective at restoring the natural beauty of a smile while filling in the gaps and missing teeth that affects the oral health of so many older adults.
The benefits of implant dentures are many, including they are accurate in replicating the look and feel of authentic teeth, this type of denture is comfortably worn, and they offer excellent long-term value and affordability.
Whether you are getting implant dentures or have recently had them put in, it’s a new normal getting used to them.
To enjoy long-term success with your new dentures and to help you get used to wearing them, here is some helpful advice we think is important to keep in mind.
Tenderness
First off, if you’re feeling any sort of tenderness the first few days afterwards, this is completely normal.
Any sort of physical discomfort should gradually reduce itself and after 2-3 days, your mouth will be back to feeling like itself.
Sore Spots
If you notice sore spots, contact your denturist. Sore spots in your mouth with implant dentures aren’t normal.
With properly-fitted dentures, you shouldn’t be experiencing any sort of open wounds or gum soreness beyond the usual tenderness.
Until your denturist signs off on it as being ‘normal’, it’s alright to be concerned about extreme soreness and to reach out to them for guidance.
If anything, you can’t be too cautious. Continual irritation of the gums can lead to an infection.
“It Feels Like I Have Something in My Mouth.”
Unless you have previously worn dentures, your mouth is used to not having anything like this in your mouth.
Now that you have implant dentures in there, the initial feeling may be like you have something in your mouth.
Your mouth can even react accordingly, with your salivary glands producing more saliva than normal and your tongue becoming tied up in regular speech. This sort of ‘mouth confusion’ shouldn’t last longer than a week.
The more you wear them and do your regular day-to-day tasks – talking, eating, etc. – the faster things will calm down in this respect.
Socializing is Weird
You may find yourself very self-aware when speaking and socializing with implant dentures.
For so long, you’ve had a certain look to your teeth. Now, it’s different. What if people notice – who cares!
Though easier said than done, in all seriousness, for some patients it is a challenge in social situations not to feel like someone is staring at your dentures.
The best advice we can give is that this isn’t a bad thing. Your implant dentures look great and they make you look great. Flaunt it! Be proud of it! There’s no reason not to be.
Speaking is a Challenge
Some patients may feel as if speaking is like a new skill they have to learn.
Practice. Talk around the house. Get used to pronouncing different words.
Don’t worry about implant dentures slipping out of place or falling out. They are secured by a literal implant in your jaw. For them to come out, so would your jaw. Rest assured, implant-supported dentures are never going to move an inch. No slippage whatsoever.
You can feel confident in knowing that, in case you have reservations about using them in professional situations or in other interactions.
Eating With Implant Dentures
If you’ve been eating for years with missing teeth, suddenly with implant dentures, eating has a different feel.
This is normal. It will probably take some time to get used to eating with them in.
Though it’s unnecessary, some patients find sticking with soft foods at first helps them get used to the biting down and chewing involved in eating.
Always follow the advice of your denturist on what you’re allowed to eat in the early days of denture-wearing.
Implant Dentures Cleaning
Your denturist will provide you direct, specific instruction on how to maintain and clean implant dentures.
It is imperative that you follow up with this commitment and clean them every day. Treat your dentures like real teeth. In terms of aesthetically and what they are to your oral health, any implant-supported dentures might as well be the real thing.
By cleaning them every day, you will ensure they are kept looking their best and will avoid unnecessary damage that can come with long-term use.
Be sure to fit this into your nightly routine before bed. It will be well worth it.
You will be so glad after those first few days or week of awkwardness. Implant dentures are advantageous to so many Canadians. Take it one day at a time. If you’re really not enjoying getting used to implant dentures, slow down and take a breath. You will get used to them.
